Barriers are used to prevent the movement of vehicles. There are active or passive barriers; with active barriers, there is a mechanism to open and close, allowing authorised vehicle access, whereas passive barriers prevent all access.
As a physical barrier and a deterrent to potential trespassers, security barriers can be a very successful security measure for controlling traffic flow and access around perimeters. There are a variety of barriers for security, ranging from speed bumps which simply slow traffic and full road closure barriers, which can temporarily stop all movement of traffic from a particular area.
Security barriers can be either permanent or temporary, depending on the intended use and duration of required control. Permanent barriers have a substructure built within the road, making the barrier more secure. Conversely, temporary barriers will be less secure and won’t withstand severe contact from a vehicle as they are placed on the road surface. However, these barriers can be used in a wider variety of circumstances and can be quickly deployed to add additional protection for scenarios with higher traffic than usual.
– The arm allows vehicles to enter or exit.
– Can be automatic or manual.
– More affordable than a hydraulic system but not as secure.
– Acts better as a visual deterrent and is not ram-proof.
– Prevent entry for vehicles over a certain height.
– Used to warn drivers about upcoming height restrictions that may cause damage to the vehicle and surrounding infrastructure.
Within our wide range of vehicle barrier solutions, you will find all manner of hydraulic and electro-mechanical automatic models, with articulated arm, rigid arm, top and bottom skirted, and bottom-skirted versions.
Traditionally, road blockers are yellow to increase visibility and to identify the lack of access. Limiting traffic flow in either or both directions is an effective way to block vehicles’ entry into an unguarded point.
Hydraulically powered blockers and bollards use power packs and systems contained within a steel cabinet beside the road, which is both ran proofs and offers a high level of security. Some blockers rely on gravity to lower the barrier, increasing the time it takes. Road blockers can also be integrated with fire systems to lower automatically in the event of a fire.
Use a hydraulic system to raise barriers from beneath the road.
Pressurised sensors are activated when a vehicle approaches from the correct direction.
Ideal for large car parks or busy sites, locations with high traffic volume.
Manual or automatic access control through various devices, such as a key card or numberplate recognition.
Fail-safe or fail-secure options available. Fail-safe blockers automatically lower in the event of a power failure while fail-secure will remain raised.
Integrate blockers with fire systems to lower automatically in the event of a fire.

Barriers
Also known as raising curbs, barriers consist of a wide steel plate angled upwards that lifts from the ground to either prevent or grant vehicle access to your site.
Bollards
Bollards are vertical cylinders that protrude above the ground and can be hydraulically operated, manually operated or static. Used primarily to protect people and buildings from vehicles, they are typically painted yellow to increase visibility.
At Sygma, we supply and install security gates for commercial, residential, educational and high security sites across the UK. Our range of automated and manual gates allows the flow of vehicles and pedestrians into your site to be monitored and controlled effectively, giving you complete oversight of who enters and exits your premises at all times.
We understand that protecting your people and property is paramount, but equally that granting the right people convenient and comfortable access requires a properly integrated security solution. Our security gates can also be paired with high security fencing constructed from the same hard wearing materials for a fully cohesive perimeter system.
Choosing the right security gate for your commercial premises will depend on a number of factors including the space available on site, the volume of traffic you need to manage, your privacy requirements and the level of security needed.

Swing gates provide both pedestrian and vehicular access and are generally cheaper to install and maintain than sliding gates. Sufficient clear space is required for the gate to swing open fully, making them best suited to sites where space is not a limiting factor.
Sliding gates are an ideal solution where space is limited and a swing gate is not practical. They operate on either a cantilever or tracked system. Tracked sliding gates run along a track below the gate using a nylon wheel, requiring level ground kept clear of debris to prevent jamming. Cantilever gates are counterbalanced and do not require a track, making them a lower maintenance option.
Bi-folding gates deliver fast access without compromising on security, making them ideal for logistics depots, emergency services, business parks, car parks and public buildings with high pedestrian traffic such as schools, colleges and universities. Sections of the gate expand when opening and compress when closed, similar to a concertina, allowing them to open twice as fast as standard gates while taking up significantly less space. They are particularly well suited to high traffic environments where speed of access is essential.
Before securing your premises with a security gate, you must consider the availability of space, the volume of traffic, privacy and the required level of security. If determined to be appropriate for your system, our team can support you in securing your property and installing gates. We can provide a solution to meet the requirements of each gate installation, ensuring that all gates are CE marked and meet standards set out in BS EN 12978 and BS EN12453.

Our turnstiles are available in half and full height versions, providing a suitable personnel control solution for most commercial and public environments. They can be supplied as standalone products or as part of a fully integrated access control system, and are available in single or double configurations with a choice of 90 or 120 degree rotation units. Whichever option you choose, you can be confident in a robust, well established system with excellent rust prevention properties.
Access can be controlled further by requiring users to provide authorisation before entry. This can be as straightforward as a token or ID card, or for higher security environments, modern turnstile systems can incorporate more sophisticated access control technology including biometric data such as fingerprint or retina scanning.
Leading users to enter single file gives security personnel a clear view of each individual entering the premises, allowing them to accurately record the number of entrants and quickly identify and isolate any potential security threats.
It is important to consider emergency scenarios that require rapid evacuation. Adequate fire exits that allow users to bypass turnstiles entirely must be installed to ensure the safety of all occupants in the event of an emergency.
Fences offer a quick and cost effective solution to perimeter security, clearly defining property boundaries and capable of being enhanced with barbed wire and anti-climbing devices. It is worth noting that most standard fences may not withstand vehicle penetration and can still be breached by cutting through or tunnelling underneath.
Perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) can be attached to fences around the property boundary to prevent undetected breaches. Compatible with most metal fencing types including wire, mesh, palisade, security railings and solid metal fencing, these systems provide an additional layer of protection across your entire perimeter.
Sensors detect vibrations caused by climbing, cutting or lifting the fence, allowing the system to identify the exact location of an intruder. Each sensor can monitor up to 1.5km of boundary and can be concealed with vegetation to prevent tampering.
False alarms triggered by animals or weather are minimised through sophisticated alarm filtration. Advanced algorithms have been developed to detect the sharp vibration frequencies associated with climbing while filtering out the longer frequencies caused by weather or animal movement. Up to 500 levels of sensitivity can be adjusted to suit the surrounding environment and further reduce the risk of false alarms.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gates, Barriers and Perimeter Security
Yes. Gates, barriers and bollards can be integrated with access control systems, CCTV, intruder alarms and intercom systems to create a fully joined up perimeter security solution. This gives you centralised control over who enters and exits your site and ensures a rapid, coordinated response to any security incident.
