Why do you need a burglar or intruder alarm?
Installing an intruder or burglar alarm system gives you maximum security and protection from unwanted criminal activity. Whether you are reactive or proactive, a burglar alarm will provide an effective deterrent, peace of mind and ultimately protect your inventory and equipment from intruders.

Types of Burglar and Intruder Alarms
Bells-Only Alarm
A bells-only burglar alarm will produce a loud noise to scare off the intruder and make others nearby aware of the break-in.Only people in the vicinity who hear the alarm will be aware of the event, as these types of intruder and burglar alarms do not automatically inform the police or a named person
Audible burglar alarms may be adequate for retail and commercial buildings within densely populated areas. However, if your premises is in a remote location, such as an industrial estate, there may be better solutions than a bells-only alarm.
Monitored Alarms
Monitored burglar alarms offer the highest level of protection from intruders. You should always use a professional to install a monitored burglar alarm, as it should use both a wireless and wired system. Once triggered, the burglar alarm will inform the monitoring station, which can contact the police or the security company hired to monitor the premises.
For a monthly or annual fee, a monitoring company can contact either the police or a named keyholder whenever an alarm is triggered and cannot confirm the owner’s presence.
Request a QuoteOwner Confirmation
Depending on the burglar alarm system installed, confirming owner confirmation can happen in several ways:
Sequential Confirmation – An activation from two or more independent sensors or detectors can determine a high probability of a genuine or attempted intrusion.
Audio Confirmation – An activation confirmed by the monitoring centre operator who, after listening to the premises, has decided that there is a high probability of a genuine or attempted intrusion.
Visual Confirmation – An activation confirmed by the monitoring centre operator who, having interpreted a visual image transmitted from the protected premises, has decided that there is a high probability that a genuine or attempted intrusion has occurred.
Systems Without Confirmed Signalling – This is a single signal. It may receive a police response if it’s a system in Scotland that has not had a police response withdrawn, or, in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, if it’s a system installed before October 2001.
Systems With Confirmed Signalling – A line cut signal followed by a second signal will initiate a police response.
These intruder and burglar alarm systems can be connected to the CCTV system for remote surveillance and response purposes, and linked to the alarm receiving centre (ARC) for an integrated security management solution.
Wireless & Wired Alarms
Intruder and burglar alarms can be either wired or wireless, except for monitor alarms which must be both wired and wireless.
Wireless Alarms
Wireless burglar alarms use radio signals to communicate with the main control panel and are often easier to install when compared to wired systems; however, all system components require batteries to function.
Wired Alarms
Whilst they are less expensive than wireless systems, wired burglar alarm installations can take longer if the wires connecting each component need hiding. A substantial benefit of wired alarms is that they do not require batteries to function, significantly reducing the likelihood of their components not working correctly due to power failure.
Police Response Alarm System
Different types of police-response alarms
Suppose you already have or are thinking about installing a burglar alarm system. In that case, you need to know how the police response to alarm activations varies according to the type of alarm you install and your current security level.
There are two main types of intruder alarms – ‘audible only’ and ‘remotely monitored’ – both will act as a visual deterrent against criminals, but what happens once they have been activated will differ depending on the alarm type and the procedures that have been set in place.
Remotely Monitored Alarms (Type A)
Remotely monitored burglar alarms are connected via the internet to a remote monitoring station where a team of security professionals will be notified upon alarm activation. Once notified, the security team will access the situation and respond by:
- Contacting the police if the alarm has been confirmed and criminal activity has been verified
- Contacting a nominated keyholder
- Contacting a pre-arranged keyholder service
All new intruder and burglar alarm systems must be installed with confirmed technology in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, whilst in Scotland, it is only recommended and is not mandatory.
Remote burglar alarms will only qualify for police response if they are in accordance with industry standards (NSI/SSAIB), installed by an accredited security company such as Sygma and are maintained and used in accordance with BS 4737, BS 7042 or BS 6799 Class VI.
Alarms which meet these requirements will be registered with the police; however, intruder alarms will not be directly connected to the station. Burglar Alarms will be provided with a Police Unique Reference (URN), and the police will be notified once the alarm has been confirmed by an Alarm Receiving Center (ARC).
False Alarms and Police Response Times
Police response will be subject to available police resources and your current police response level. Determined by your local police station, your response level is conditional upon the number of previous false alarms within any 12 months. More false alarms will result in lower priority police attendance or total response withdrawal. There are three levels of response determined by the ACPOS policy.
Get in TouchLevels of response
There are three levels of response determined by ACPOS policy
Level 1
All burglar alarms start on level 1, which is the highest priority. This will be reduced to level 2 if police attend to 3 false alarms within 12 months.
Level 2
If lowered to level 2, police response will be 'desirable but dependent on resources'. For level one to be reinstated, burglar alarms must be recertified and remain free of false alarms for 3-months. If a further 2 false alarms occur after being lowered to level 2, the alarm will be lowered to level 3.
Level 3
Police response will be withdrawn at level 3, meaning only witnessed offences by a keyholder will be attended. Insurance coverage may increase if your business system is placed within level three.
Bells only Audible Alarms (Type B)
Audible Only and Hybrid Burglar Alarms include bells-only and automatic dialling alarms and alarms from non-compliant companies and non-compliant central monitoring stations. Unique Reference Numbers(URN) will not be issued for these systems meaning that police will only attend if a key holder has witnessed an offence.
Keyholding
Current Police policies require that you provide two keyholders trained to operate your burglar alarm, are telephone subscribers, able to attend the premises at any time, have access to the whole of the premises and can attend within 20 minutes.
