Types Of Intruder Alarms?

Bells-Only Alarm

A bells-only burglar alarm will produce a loud noise to scare off the intruder and make others nearby aware of the break-in.Only people in the vicinity who hear the alarm will be aware of the event, as these types of intruder and burglar alarms do not automatically inform the police or a named person

Audible burglar alarms may be adequate for retail and commercial buildings within densely populated areas. However, if your premises is in a remote location, such as an industrial estate, there may be better solutions than a bells-only alarm.

Monitored Alarms

Monitored burglar alarms offer the highest level of protection from intruders. You should always use a professional to install a monitored burglar alarm, as it should use both a wireless and wired system. Once triggered, the burglar alarm will inform the monitoring station, which can contact the police or the security company hired to monitor the premises.

For a monthly or annual fee, a monitoring company can contact either the police or a named keyholder whenever an alarm is triggered and cannot confirm the owner’s presence.

Wired & Wireless Alarm Systems

Wireless Alarms
Wireless burglar alarms use radio signals to communicate between sensors and the main control panel. They are generally quicker and easier to install than wired systems, making them ideal for premises where cabling would be disruptive. All components require batteries to function.

Wired Alarms
Wired burglar alarm installations are typically more cost-effective than wireless systems. They do not rely on batteries, significantly reducing the risk of component failure. Installation can take longer where cables need to be concealed, but the result is a robust, dependable system.

Owner Confirmation Methods

When a monitored alarm is triggered, the monitoring centre must confirm the alert before contacting the emergency services. Confirmation can be established in the following ways:

Sequential Confirmation

An activation from two or more independent sensors or detectors, indicating a high probability of a genuine or attempted intrusion.

Audio Confirmation

The monitoring centre operator listens to the premises and determines a high probability of a genuine or attempted intrusion before contacting the emergency services.

Visual Confirmation

The monitoring centre operator interprets a visual image transmitted from the protected premises and confirms a high probability that a genuine or attempted intrusion has occurred.

Systems Without Confirmed Signalling

A single signal system. May receive a police response in Scotland where response has not been withdrawn, or in England, Wales or Northern Ireland for systems installed before October 2001.

Systems With Confirmed Signalling

A line cut signal followed by a second signal will initiate a police response, providing a higher level of verified security for your premises.

Intruder alarm systems can also be integrated with your CCTV system for remote surveillance and linked to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) for a fully joined-up security management solution.

How Police Response Works

There are two main types of intruder alarms, audible only and remotely monitored. Both act as a visual deterrent, but the response they generate once activated differs significantly.

Remotely Monitored Alarms (Type A)
Remotely monitored alarms are connected via the internet to a professional monitoring station. Upon activation, the security team will:

Contact the police if criminal activity has been visually verified
Contact a nominated keyholder
Contact a pre-arranged keyholder service

To qualify for a police response, remotely monitored alarms must be installed in accordance with industry standards (NSI/SSAIB) and maintained in compliance with BS 4737, BS 7042 or BS 6799 Class VI. Compliant systems are registered with the police and issued a Police Unique Reference Number (URN). The police are notified once the alarm has been confirmed by an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC).

All new intruder alarm systems installed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must include confirmed signalling technology. In Scotland this is recommended but not mandatory.

Bells-Only Audible Alarms (Type B)
Bells-only and hybrid alarms, including those from non-compliant companies or monitoring stations, will not be issued a URN. Police will only attend if a keyholder has directly witnessed an offence.

Keyholding Requirements — Police policy requires that you provide two keyholders who are trained to operate your alarm, are telephone subscribers, can attend the premises at any time, have full access to the building and can arrive within 20 minutes.

False Alarms & Police Response Levels

Police response is subject to available resources and your current response level, which is determined by the number of false alarms recorded within any 12-month period. There are three levels of response under ACPOS policy:

Level 1

The highest priority. All new systems start at Level 1. Three false alarms attended by police within 12 months will result in a reduction to Level 2.

Level 2

Response becomes desirable but dependent on available resources. To return to Level 1, the system must be recertified and remain false-alarm free for three months. Two further false alarms at this level will result in a reduction to Level 3.

Level 3

Police response is withdrawn entirely. Officers will only attend if a keyholder has witnessed an offence directly. Insurance premiums may also increase at this level.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Intruder Alarms

What types of intruder alarm systems are available for commercial premises?
There are two main types of commercial intruder alarm: bells-only and remotely monitored. Bells-only systems produce an audible alert to deter intruders and alert those nearby, while monitored systems connect to a professional Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) that can verify the threat and contact the police or a nominated keyholder on your behalf. Systems can be wired, wireless, or a combination of both depending on your premises and requirements.
To qualify for a police response, your intruder alarm must be installed by an accredited security company in accordance with industry standards (NSI/SSAIB) and maintained in compliance with the relevant British Standards. Compliant systems are issued a Police Unique Reference Number (URN) and the police are notified once the alarm has been confirmed by an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Bells-only systems are not issued a URN.
Police response is subject to your current response level, which is determined by the number of false alarms attended within any 12 month period. Systems start at Level 1, which is the highest priority. Repeated false alarms can result in a reduction to Level 2, where response becomes resource dependent, or Level 3, where police response is withdrawn entirely. Keeping your system well maintained is the most effective way to avoid false alarms.
Yes. Commercial intruder alarm systems can be integrated with your CCTV system for remote surveillance and linked to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) for a fully joined up security management solution. Integration with access control systems is also possible, giving you centralised oversight of your entire security setup from a single platform.
Post installation support includes routine servicing, system testing, and remote or on site assistance to keep your alarm operating correctly and compliantly. Regular maintenance is essential to retain your police response level, meet insurance requirements and ensure your system performs reliably when it matters most.
